What does studying in Malaysia actually cost? Reading the full bill

When a parent asks "what does studying in Malaysia cost?", they don't mean tuition alone — they mean the number that actually leaves their account. Plenty of agencies answer with the first figure only, and the surprises arrive later.

This article breaks down every line so you see the full picture before committing.

1. Tuition

Fees vary far more by subject than by university:

• Medicine and dentistry are the highest by a wide margin, paid across five years
• Engineering, pharmacy and health sciences sit in the upper-middle band
• Business, IT and design sit in the middle
• Diploma programmes cost noticeably less than bachelor's degrees
• A foundation year is an extra year with its own cost

One important point: most universities allow payment in semester instalments, not a lump sum. Ask for the instalment schedule before comparing two universities — a higher total with comfortable instalments may suit your family better than a cheaper one demanding a large upfront payment.

Questions to ask specifically:

• Is the published figure per year or for the whole programme?
• Does it include registration, laboratory and material fees?
• Do fees rise annually, and by how much?
• What's the fee for retaking a failed module?

2. Visa and insurance (EMGS)

Paid to Education Malaysia Global Services through your university, usually covering:

• Visa application processing
• Compulsory health insurance
• The post-arrival medical
• Endorsing the pass into your passport

These recur annually on renewal, though renewal usually costs less than the first year.

3. One-off arrival costs

Items paid once at the start that people routinely forget:

• Flights
• Housing deposit (typically two months' rent plus one month upfront)
• Furniture and basic household needs
• A SIM card, and a phone if needed
• Clothing suitable for the climate

4. Monthly living costs

Multiply by the number of months in the academic year — or by twelve if the student stays in Malaysia over the holidays.

5. An English programme, if needed
