Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia

Johor's public technical university

UTHM began in 1993 as a training centre for polytechnic teaching staff, became a technical institute in 1996, a university college in 2000 and a full university in 2007. That history explains its character: a public technical (TVET) university, nine faculties most of them engineering, and teaching that leans towards the workshop and the laboratory rather than the lecture theatre.

Overview

For a hands-on engineering career, not just an engineering certificate

The university publishes a 97.5% graduate employment figure. Be honest with yourself about the rest: Batu Pahat is a small town roughly two and a half hours from Kuala Lumpur, and life there is very quiet. If you want the capital, this is not your university. If you want low public-university fees and nothing to distract you, it is one of the better offers you will get.

Highlights

Why UTHM?

  • Technical by design, not by accident

UTHM is formally classified as a public TVET university, which means its curricula were built around applied work and industrial training from the start — the practical element was not bolted on to a theoretical syllabus later.

  • Nine faculties, most of them engineering

Civil Engineering and Built Environment; Electrical and Electronic; Mechanical and Manufacturing; Engineering Technology; Computer Science and IT; Applied Sciences; Technology Management and Business; Technical and Vocational Education; and the Johor Business School.

  • Two aviation routes

UTHM runs its aeronautical engineering technology degree in two separate tracks — aircraft maintenance and professional piloting — which is rare in a Malaysian public university.

  • Two campuses in Johor

The main campus at Batu Pahat covers 556 acres, with a branch campus at Pagoh on a further 170. Singapore is closer than Kuala Lumpur, which matters to some families.
